Ayuda comes from the Spanish word for: to HELP, to ASSIST, to AID; and since 1995, the Ayuda Foundation a regional non-profit organization has developed a track record for success working with the different islands states, governments, departments other non-profit organization's, to help improve the quality of life for the people living on the islands of the Western and Central Pacific region.

Formed by Executive Director Carlotta Leon Guerrero (then Association Pacific Island Legislatures - Guam member), Dr. Mike Cruz (then Medical Director of Guam Memorial Hospital, now Lt. Governor of Guam), and Christine Nielsen (then Director of the Sales & Marketing Division of Continental Micronesia); the mission that the foundation has dedicated itself to is to help those in need.

The concept of "Ayuda" is a tradition that connects islanders of today with our past. Our traditions for helping one another were developed out of necessity as small groups of islanders living on small and often remote islands learned to work together and share to help each other to survive.

We are very proud of the men and women in uniform who find time in their busy schedule to make a difference in the lives of others. Here are some Coast Guard Volunteers loading donated school equipment, furniture, supplies and textbooks to transport to schools on the outer islands of Chu'ck.

In a region lacking many of the elements of a modern communication infrastructure, island residents are separated from modern society by thousand of miles of open ocean and thousands of years of traditional culture. Island culture is all about relationships with other people. The people-focused culture is a reminder of what really matters as the world becomes time challenged and stressed by the fast pace of modern society. What really matters is our connections with one another and the people we love.

The challenge we face is huge, but the talents and the hearts of the people we work with are up to the task. That is why each and every one of us that get involved in volunteer work sees that when we improve the quality of one life we truly do improve the quality of all life. We hear it all the time, that through volunteering, one life that that gets improved the most is that of the volunteer.
